“Blood Done Sign My Name,” the big-screen adaptation of Tim Tyson’s non-fiction best-seller, dramatizing the events surrounding a racially-charged murder that occurred in 1970 in Oxford, North Carolina, received a limited release in 95 theaters throughout Georgia and the Carolinas on February 19.

The just-in-time for Valentine’s Day release strategy for “Dear John,” the Screen Gems adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novel, proved to be the right move for the film. Released nationwide on February 5, the film topped the box office charts its opening weekend with a $30 million take — effectively knocking “Avatar” out of the top spot.
